Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

A few days ago trailer #2 of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them hit TV and computer screens across the globe. After watching it I preceded to watch it 5 more times. Then I watched it a few more times because it was remarkable. I can’t remember the last time a trailer made me speechless or gave me chills the way this did.

Whoever cut this trailer not only tapped into the magic of Harry Potter, they brought back to life the very essence of the series. The trailer starts by laying the groundwork of visually introducing the new characters. Then, the trailer progresses with subtle imagery every fan would recognize: color tone, set design, costume design, a newspaper with moving images, and….music. As the trailer builds up there is one last scene before the triumphant resurgence that truly takes you back to the wizarding world. And that is when Dan Fogier walks towards the camera as tableware objects float past him.

Everything about this scene is familiar from the wallpaper design and color, to the elegant display of objects magically floating to their places. This is what captured Harry’s and our love of magic throughout his story and it’s the fascination we felt when Dumbledore similarly put back together Slughorn’s purposefully wrecked home(that wasn’t really his) in the Half-Blood Prince. This scene completely revives what we loved about Harry Potter and then they seal the deal with the climactic, heart pounding, musical anthem.

Brilliance like I’ve never seen before in a movie trailer. It was the right amount of info to build our curiosity in the story and the perfect amount of visual and audio homage that I now beg for November 18th to be here. Well done Yates and well done Rowling. Your next Butterbeer is on me!
